Welcome
The Senior Scientists and Engineers (SSE) is an organization of scientists, engineers, educators, physicians, and other professionals who volunteer their services to support the needs of government, education, and the community. SSE is sponsored by Education and Human Resources Programs at the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
SSE’s purpose is to provide a forum for retired STEM professionals to continue making important contributions in their areas of expertise while enjoying the fellowship of their colleagues. Most members are retirees from government, academia, business, industry, or public service.
Some examples of SSE activities that support government, education, and the community include:
- Review scientific and technical proposals and reports
- Work with teachers and students in K-12 classrooms
- Serve as reviewers for AAAS’s Science Books & Films
- Organize presentations by leading STEM professionals on topics of current interest
A new initiative, “AAAS/SSE K-8 Science Volunteer Program,” is aimed at mobilizing the large number of retired STEM professionals in the country to assist K-8 teachers. An initial component of this program, is the “MCPS Science Volunteer Project,” which recruits volunteers to assist teachers and students in schools in Montgomery County, MD. We are working closely with two other volunteer programs, one led by Northeastern University and the other by the San Joaquin County (CA) Office of Education.
Please take some time to read about and consider volunteering for one of these exciting and worthwhile programs.
